We held our drawing on June 2, 2008. We gave away two gift certificates for Barnes & Noble and three runner-up prizes. Happy summer and keep reading!
Books rock! How do books rock, are you wondering? Let me tell you:
Because they are cheaper than a plane ticket but can take you all around the world. Travel around Europe with Ginny in Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes (F JOH).
Because a good romance can keep you dancing for days and days. Dance in the middle of the night with Jenica and her sisters in Wildwood Dancing (F MAR) -- once a month -- in secret -- with fairies and Night People. What could be more fun? Or dangerous?
Because how else can you ride a hoverboard around a forbidden city like Pretty City from the comfort of your own room? Hoverboard over a city of the future with Tally and Shay in Uglies (F WES).
Do books rock YOUR world? Come to the library media center and share books that have rocked your world. Every reason and example you give, you will be entered into a drawing to win a free book.
So keep reading during these last few weeks of school. Though our school library is now closed for checking out books, come in and let us know about your favorite books. Books rock!
Beehive Contest
We held the Beehive Raffle after school on Tuesday, April 8, 2008. Everyone walked away with something, from king-sized Milky Way bars to the grand prize of a $15 gift certificate at Barnes & Noble.
In the Students vs Teachers challenge:
113 student votes / 1020 students in school = 10.9 % participation rate
68 faculty votes with 8 different faculty participating / 53 teachers = 15.1 % participation rate
So, in raw votes, the students won, but faculty won in the participation rate.
In the raffle, we had several winners, all of whom read and rated at least one of the books nominated for the Beehive Award. The Raffle Winners are listed below (their TA teacher is listed in parentheses): 4th prize: Coney Z (Longeteig), Trevor S (Beckham), Ryan S (Taylor), and Breanna T (Griffiths) 3rd prize:Nicole B (Tweed), Renae J (Longeteig), and Alicia J (Frank) 2nd prize:Skyler A (Ibanez) and Cameron H (Howell) Grand prize winner: Couper G (Howell) ($15 gift certificate for Barnes & Noble)
Here are some other comparisons:
Female vs Male
144 female votes (13 students, 8 faculty)
37 male votes (12 students, 0 faculty)
Biggest readers
Ryan S (Taylor), Emily B (Naumann), and Breanna T (Griffiths) all read 5 books.
Mitch W (Von Der Lohe) read 7 books.
Justin H (Longeteig) read 9 books.
The biggest reader by far was Coney Zealley (Longeteig) who read 50 books. Wow! That was even more than me and I thought I had read a lot!
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all the readers who rated these books. The book winners will be announced by the Children's Literature Association of Utah (CLAU) on April 25, 2008. We plan on holding this challenge again next year. If you didn't get a chance to participate this year, you'll have another chance next year. Come in and check it out!
Update 3-28-08
We are entering the last week of the Beehive contest and raffle. If you want to have a chance to win a prize, read one of the nominated books for a Beehive Award and turn in a ballot. Students and teachers are still tied in the contest to see who could read more of these books. We will hold the raffue after school on Tuesday, April 8, in the Library Media Center.
Also, six ballots have been turned in without names. If you don't remember writing your name on your ballot, please come in and see me so we can put your name on your ballot and enter you into the raffle.
Update 3-17-08
Total votes cast: 170
Votes by students: 107
Votes by teachers: 63
107 votes / 1020 total students = 10.5 % student participation
8 different teachers / 53 teachers = 15.1 % faculty participation
So, for now, it is still a tie. Students are winning the total vote count, but teachers are winning the participation count.
Update 3-3-08
There have been 101 votes cast so far, 54 by students and 47 by teachers. So, in raw votes, the students are ahead, but not by much. Since students have such a number advantage over the teachers, I am going to compare percentage of participation as well. By using the facts that five out of 53 teachers have cast all the faculty votes so far and that there are about 1,020 students at OHMC, we could say that 9.4% of teachers have participated so far while only 5.3% of the student body is represented by the students’ total votes. This is comparing apples to oranges a bit since it calculates the percentage of teacher participation based only on the number of different faculty members voting while calculating the percentage of student participation based on the total number of student votes. However, I feel this comparison evens the playing field a little without allowing a few avid teacher readers to win the competition for the entire faculty and staff.
So, right now, the Beehive Awards contest between faculty and students is a tie. Students are winning in total votes, but teachers are winning in percentage of participation.
We will be holding this contest for another month. Have you read a Beehive Award nominee yet? Come in and check it out!
Contest Announcement
We love to see students check out items from the school library. Keep it in mind as a great place to find good reading material for your TA or whenever. As an added incentive, we will be holding a raffle for library users at the end of 3rd quarter. To enter the raffle, you need to read one of the books that have been nominated for this year’s Beehive Award. These books are on display on top of the short orange bookshelves in the library media center. Lists of the nominated titles are also available at the circulation desk. For every nominated book you read and vote on, you will also be entered into the raffle.
In addition to the raffle, we will be having a friendly competition between the students and staff at Oquirrh Hills Middle School. Who will read more of these nominated Beehive Award books? Every vote that is turned in will count toward the student or the staff total. Can the students outread the teachers? Time will tell! Come to the library and check it out!
